You may be wondering: what is this thing called sustainability? Maybe you wonder: How does one become more sustainable? What's all the fuss about and why is society 'unsustainable' in the present day?

The field is currently developing and there many answers, ideas, and viewpoints on the topic. I will try my best to present a balanced viewpoint on the subject. By presenting facts and the best scientific research I hope to win you over to think about the effects you and your community have on the rest of the globe. I will also be presenting theory which brings together a synthesis of the best knowledge available across many disciplines on the forefront of environmental policy, environmental technology, and environmental management.

Below is a Venn diagram that gives a pretty good representation of all of the factors that must be considered when talking about: sustainability, sustainable development, and ,moving past that, regeneration.

In the present day there is a growing movement of scientists, policy makers, and thinkers that agree that humans are becoming a global force for environmental change, whether good or bad. It is undeniable that the health of the environment and the resources it provides humanity are necessary for continued prosperity. Often times people do not consider the interrelation of subjects the above diagram displays. They are truly intertwined and only represent a small part of the over system of life but they are important to discuss none the less. The environment (Earth) provides us with the resources we need to live and prosper economically and socially. Economic factors or "the economy" drive the usage of environmental resources (wood, oil, minerals, etc) and provide people with social resources (transportation, communities, jobs, etc). Our social position and other societal factors often determines how we perceive the environment and the economy and is the medium which we interact with other people in society.

I propose to you that presently society places an over-emphasis on economic prosperity at the jeopardy of social and environmental wealth. In a perfect world we would be right in the middle.

That is about it for my brief explanation of what sustainability is. I hope I've interested you in learning more and come back to check out the rest of my posts! If you have any questions please leave a comment. No negativity, just open-minded discussion.
